Lacrosse Championships: |
Burning River Lacrosse Finishes 2nd
At U.S.
National Lacrosse Championship
Burning
River’s Elite travel team
finished 2nd in the U. S. National
Tournament of Champions in the Rising
Star division (no seniors). The team
lost in the Championship game 6-4 to the
Copperheads Black (GA) after
outscoring opponents 59-12 in the five
previous Tournament games.
The Tampa-based Tournament of Champions
is sponsored by Dick’s Sporting Goods
and is the only National tournament for
High School Lacrosse.
The
participating teams travelled from 20
different United States and Canadian
provinces to compete for the national
championship.
Pool Play
Despite a
torrential downpour on Friday, the team
started the tournament by going 3-0 in
pool play with impressive (double digit)
victories over the Tampa Tribe (FL),
Copperheads Orange (GA) and
the CT Cardinals Red (CT). In those
games the squad outscored its three
opponents 39-2. Burning River’s coach
Woody Calleri was proud of his team’s
3-0 start noting, “The weather affected
us a little bit early on today. In the
first game, the footing was a little
sloppy for the kids, but as the day went
on, we got our legs back and at the same
time our ball handling and stick work
got clicking.”
Quarterfinals
As the
tournament progressed to the medal
round, the team continued to post
impressive results. In the quarterfinal
match against the Palm Beach Storm,
Burning River jumped out to a 9-2 lead
at halftime before coasting to an 11-3
victory. Heading into the semifinals
the team had outscored its opponents 50
to 5.
Semifinals
In the
semifinals Burning River Lacrosse faced
tournament favorite Mesa Fresh (PA).
The game was
an awesome display of offensive and
defensive skills showcasing the highest
caliber of play and could have gone
either way at any point. Burning River
Lacrosse scored first to take a 1-0
lead. Mesa Fresh tied the score at 1
before Burning River tallied two quick
goals to go up 3-1 midway through the
first half. Mesa Fresh then went on a
4-0 run before halftime to take a 5-3
lead into intermission. Mesa Fresh
tallied quickly at the start of the
second half to take a 6-3 lead. Burning
River’s offense then woke up and
recorded three straight scores to tie
the game at 6 with about 12 minutes to
go. Mesa Fresh would score next to
retake the lead at 7-6 with about 10
minutes to play. Burning River then
took charge of the game with 3 goals
showcasing
Geoff
Geppert,
Chris Humphrey and
Bryce
Pasquarello, each goal
topping the other in terms of individual
effort and athletic ability. The game
was 9-7 with a little over 3 minutes
remaining. It was now Mesa Fresh’s turn
to mount a comeback, and the players did
not disappoint. Over the next three
minutes and 1 man up situation, they
threw everything they had at Burning
River. Only an absolutely spectacular
display of goaltending, athletic ability
and will to win by Burning River’s
goalie Andrew Harris kept Mesa off the
scoreboard and propelled Burning River
into the Championship game.
Finals
In a
tight, hard-fought championship tilt,
Burning River jumped out to an early
lead as
Leo
Horne drew rope on
Copperheads goalie
Michael
Nugent to make it 1-0 for the
Ohio boys.
Jay
DeBole netted two straight
goals in a 68-second span for
Copperheads as they took the
lead, 2-1, midway through the first
half.
Despite
amazing goaltending throughout, the
teams would trade goals over the last
four minutes of the half, with
Copperheads netting theirs
five seconds before halftime to take the
lead 3-2.
Stick-master DeBole opened the second
half with his third of four goals with a
nifty, unassisted score with just over
20 minutes remaining to make it 4-2
Snakes.
Scotty Smith tacked on the fifth goal
for
Copperheads Black near the
12-minute mark and things looked bleak
for Burning River. But
Edward
Barksdale had other plans.
The lanky scorer slipped the ball in the
net with 9:40 to go on a sweet,
unassisted effort to cut the lead to
5-3.
James Dahlheimer contributed
a tally 90 seconds later for Burning
River on a nifty assist from Gray
Leeseberg to make it a one-goal game at
5-4, and fans were in for an exciting
end to a great game.
The star
of this contest was DeBole. His
unassisted netter with 1:53 left put the
icing on the cake for coach
Mike
Mutzel’s
Copperheads as they had the
insurance goal they needed at 6-4. The
crew from Atlanta would become national
champions less than two minutes later.
“Our defense and goalie were phenomenal
today,” said a proud coach Mutzel. “What
a great feeling it is to be with all of
these kids here today.”
Wrap up
“Burning
River has been incredibly impressive.
I have seen a couple of their games in
two days. They have a complete team.
The
goalies have allowed only 5
goals in two days, the
defense
has pressured opponents once they step
across the midline and they make good
decisions on their slide packages, their
middies are athletic, have
good sticks and a tenacious pursuit of
ground balls. Their
attack
has been a standout on this talented
team. They move the ball with precision
and know how to rip the back of the net.
The team is well coached with great
athletes.” coach/spectator
“Coach, it was an awesome finals and
your team in every respect showed the
highest caliber of play. The game could
have gone either way at any point. The
reason for the email is what you and
your team did at the end of the
Tournament……Winning the Tournament was
great, but my son and his peers
were
taken back with your and your team’s
sportsmanship after the game.
You and your team made a very positive
impression on all those boys and as a
Dad, I just wanted to thank you for
illustrating the class and character of
what Lacrosse is all about.” Parent of
Copperheads Black player

Tryouts
: |
|
Burning River
Lacrosse, the area's leader in Lacrosse
Travel Teams, Leagues, Camps and
Instruction, is pleased to announce tryouts
for our 2010 summer travel teams.
Burning River
Lacrosse’s travel teams were founded in 2006
to showcase lacrosse players who are highly
skilled but also of high character. Unlike
other travel teams that only accept coaches'
recommendations, Burning River Lacrosse
holds tryouts so that every player with an
interest can showcase his talent and make a
case for making the team. As a result, our
players are not primarily from 1 or 2 teams
but from numerous programs. In fact, our
2009 teams had players from over 30 schools
and all 4 regions (Toledo, Cleveland,
Columbus and Cincinnati) in Ohio.
Since the
inception of Burning River Lacrosse, our
teams have consistently finished at or near
the top of the tournaments they have
entered. In both 2008 (Elite, Rising Star)
and 2009 (Select, U15) multiple Burning
River Lacrosse teams won or finished as a
runner up at multiple national tournaments
and as a result qualified for the
prestigious Dick’s Sporting Goods ‘National
Tournament of Champions.’ The tournament is
billed as the only true national
championship for high school and u15 club
teams and invitations are by qualifying
performance only.

All players and parents should be aware of
the commitment required for this team.
Should you be selected for a team, it is
expected that you will attend and

If you are selected and you cannot make such
a commitment, please do not accept a spot on
the team.
Important:
If you make the team but can not make at

replacement. Should that replacement be
able to attend all 3 tournaments we will
give him your starting spot and you will
moved to an alternate position for the
tournament you can attend. This policy is
in place because it is extremely difficult
to find replacements and we need to have the
broadest latitude possible in searching for
them.

League Information
and the Ohio High School
rules: |
|
Parents
recently we have received several requests
to allow young men in the 8th grade
to play in the High School league. We
would love to let your sons play in these
leagues and most of them have the talent to
play up. However we can not honor your
requests. Your request while
reasonable violates the OHSAA / OHSLA rules
that area High Schools follow. If we
honor your request your son could lose a
year of high school eligibility.
The
OHSAA/OHSLA
rule in question is General Sports
Regulation 33.3. This regulation
states
"7th
and 8th grade students may not practice
with, participate on the same team with or
compete against 9th through 12 grade
students."
The penalty
for a violation of this rule is a sanction
that is not to exceed the loss of 1
year of eligibility at the high school level
(no senior year) and disqualification
from playing on a middle school team in the
current year.
Given that we
can not allow 8th grade students to play in
the High School leagues. We are sorry but
we will not put these kids in a situation
where they can be declared ineligible.
Thank you for
your understanding.
