Camp Offerings

Burning River Lacrosse offers the follow league play opportunities:

  • 3rd to 8th grade Fundamental Skills Camp (June 20 - 22, 2011)
    Camp Mission:
This camp is focused on the goal of improving the camper’s fundamental skills and understanding of team concepts.  This camp is not a team camp but a skills camp where the vast majority of time is spent teaching techniques and fundamentals in individual or small group sessions.

    Why attend?
Every year we hear from unhappy parents who have spent $400, $500 or more to send their son to a "name" camp (sponsored by a well known player or one that states that he will be there) that barely taught him the fundamentals he needs to improve his game.  The name player either did not coach (just showed for a speech) or only showed the kids high level tricks. The parent realizes to late that their fees only went to pad someones pocket rather than improve their sons game.

Instead of having that happen to you send him to this Burning River Lacrosse Camp.  Our camps are focused on the goal of improving the camper’s fundamental skills and understanding of team concepts.  They are not team camps but skills camps where the vast majority of time is spent teaching techniques and fundamentals in individual or small group sessions.  To that end the camp will include instruction on individual (Stick Skills), positional (Attack, Midfield, Defense and Goaltending), and team (Transition and Set Piece Offense and Defense) play.  Campers will receive instruction from some of the area’s best coaches and players in a low camper to instructor ratio.   Last year's coach / camper ratio was 6 to 1.

  • High School Fundamental Skills Camp (June / July 2011)
Camp Mission: This camp is by invitation only (players must be have a coach's - High school / Club coach) recommendation to attend this camp. This camp is for players looking to improve their skills, make the step up to the next level and lead their teams (travel team and travel team quality players - 2012 starters). It is not for beginning players.

    Why attend?
Every year we hear from an increasing number of players about how they would like find a way to improve their fundamental skills (I need to work on riding so i can help my team. I have to improve my shot so I can be a better dodger. I am not sure how to slide, etc.) over the summer. We also hear from a number of coaches about how they would like to see their players continue their development in an intense small group setting that focused on the fundamentals. This camp was designed to address those concerns. The camp is limited to a small number of players, the instruction is intense (small groups with high reps and low player to coach ratio) and the drills are geared towards helping the attendees get ready to lead their teams in the coming year. The instruction will be given by some of the top area coaches, and Burning River Lacrosse alumni who are playing in college. It will be based on the practices that some of the top college coaches in Division 1, 2, and 3 (e.g. Salisbury, Roanoke, NYIT, Syracuse, Maryland, Hobart) have helped us organize and have used themselves to guide their teams to the success they have had in the NCAA playoffs.

  • The Goalie School (July 13 - 17, 2011) * in conjunction with Bill Pilat
Camp Mission: The Goalie School camp is focused on the goal of improving the camper's fundamental goaltending skills. The camp is not a team camp but a fundamental goaltending skills camp where the vast majority of time is spent teaching techniques and fundamentals in individual or small group sessions.

    Why attend?

Coach Pilat has put together the most innovative curriculum for goalies wishing to improve their skills. The 5 day program includes extensive videotaping of the goalies, coaches talks and demonstrations, individual analysis, one on one instruction/evaluation and special programs with sports psychologists.; Coach Pilat and his staff will be filming each goalie who attends camp and providing all goalies with a mini DVD of their play to take home with them. Goalies can pop the DVD into their DVD players or computers and watch their techniques in the goal.

Weather Policy

We play in all weather except lightening. Lightening will delay things 30 minutes but we will still try to get the camp in if the lightening was earlier in the morning.; A passing storm at 7 AM does not cancel the camp. If it is raining who cares this is not baseball we play. If they get muddy so be it. Kids love mud (at least my kids do) and the washing machine cleans up their clothes. Some of you will ask at what point will you call it for rain? I will put it this way, unless you see animals lining up two by two and a man building an arc we will play.

Should a session get cancelled due to lightening we will do the best we can to work with the facilities manager to schedule a make up date/session However, please understand that that may not always be possible. We do not refund a percentage of the registration fee if weather cancel a date/session.
