No. We run our leagues as recreational leagues. Everyone is allowed to participate and everyone who registers plays.
Please be aware that in our leagues we try to play everyone as evenly as possible.

Top Reasons To Play In Our Fall Leagues

We provide the best opportunity to improve your fundamental skills because

  1. We play 7 on 7 which best prepares you for your Spring 10 on 10 season.
  2. We use full size goals not box goals.
  3. Our defensemen get to use their long sticks (better for defense and attack).
  4. We have real officials call the games not college players or coaches.
  5. Our players are coached by some of the top college/high school coaches and college/high school players.  The coaches’ primary job is to make sure that the players are learning fundamentals skills, enjoying themselves, and developing a love of the game.
  6. With teams and players from the top local and regional programs you face the best competition.

Fall League Offering - Sunday September 11 to Sunday October 23, 2011

Burning River Lacrosse (BRL) presents a 7 week Fall outdoor lacrosse league for boys in High School / College (U20 & 9th / 10th grade Divisions) and boys entering 3rd to 8th grades (3rd/4th, 5th/6th and 7th/8th grade divisions).  The league is currently set up for 7 on 7 competition and will follow all OHSAA, OHSLA, and NFHS rules and regulations.  Note: Each division is limited to the first 10 teams/groups of individuals that sign up.

League Levels
The league is composed of five divisions: U19 (High School Seniors / Juniors and College players), 9th / 10th (players entering the 9th / 10th grades), 7th / 8th (players entering the 7th or 8th grades), 5th / 6th  (players entering the 5th / 6th grades), 3rd / 4th  (players entering the 3rd / 4th grades). Full descriptions of the individual divisions are below.

  • 11th / 12th Grade Division (Senior/Junior )
The 11th / 12th Grade Division is for High School Seniors / Juniors.  To be eligible, you must not have graduated from college and you must be 19 years old or younger.
  • 9th / 10th Grade Division (Sophomore & Freshman)
The 9th / 10th Grade Division is for players in the 9th and 10th grades and limited experience Juniors.  To be eligible, you must be in high school and NOT a senior. (2012 Graduate).
  • 7th / 8th Grade Division
The 7th / 8th Grade Division is for players in the 7th or 8th grades or younger players with the size and experience to compete at this level.
  • 5th to 6th  Grade Division
The 5th / 6th Grade Division is limited to players in the 5th or 6th grade at the start of the league.
  • 3rd to 4th  Grade Division
The 3rd / 4th Grade Division is limited to players in the 3th or 4th grade at the start of the league.

Requests To Play Up - Every league we received a number of requests from younger players to play in the next level up (e.g. 8th grader in the 11th / 12th grade division).  Some of these players reason that they were on their school's top team so they could do it (new club), some want to play up because that is what the adults in their lives told them that they had to do to improve (if that were true you would want to play against the pros and that is only asking for trouble) and some wanted to do it so that they had "street creed" (peer pressure).  At one time we tried to honor all those requests.  However, after reviewing how those players did we realized that things had gotten out of control and we need to step in and restore some sensibility to the situation before people had a bad experience or got hurt.   Therefore, unless you have made one of our travel teams (proven that you are one of the area’s best), we will not honor your request to play up at the start of the league.  If you want, we will evaluate you over the first two weeks and then make a decision to move you up at that point.  Thank you for your understanding on this matter.

Game Dates
All five leagues will play their games on Sundays in September and October.  The dates are September 11, 18, 25 and October 2, 9, 16, and 23.

Game Times
Each of the five divisions will play their games at the same time each Sunday (makes planning easy). The specific times are 11th / 12th (9 AM), 9th / 10th (10 AM), 7th/8th (11 AM) and 3rd/4th & 5th/6th grade (12 Noon).

Practice Times

Practice for the non-high school divisions will be held on Sundays 1 hour prior to their games. (e.g. practice for the 7th/8th grade division is at 10 AM with a game at 11 AM.) There is no practice for the 11th / 12th and 9th / 10th grade leagues due to OHSAA / OHSLA rules.

Schedules
Complete schedules will be emailed out and posted online the week before the league starts.  In general, each team will have a 1 hour game and a 1 hour practice each Sunday (11th / 12th and 9th / 10th grade divisions do not have a practice).  The players will attend practice first (practice is divided by skill level) before attending the game. See sample weekly schedule

Note: The schedule is subject to change including playing games earlier / later or on days other than Wednesdays to accommodate coaches, officials, or the facility’s schedule

Individual Cost
The leagues cost costs $100,  which includes seven games, the cost of the facility, officials’ fees and coaches' fees.  Note: A $25 processing fee will be assessed to any returned checks.

Shoes
All the fields are grass.  Plan accordingly.

Burning River does not provide medical insurance. All players must have their own medical insurance.

Weather Policy

We play in all weather except lightening.  Lightening will delay things 30 minutes but we will still try to get the game in if the lightening was earlier in the afternoon.  A passing storm at 2 PM does not cancel the league. If it is raining who cares this is not baseball we play.  If they get muddy so be it.  Kids love mud (at least my kids do) and the washing machine cleans up their clothes.  Some of you will ask at what point will you call it for rain?  I will put it this way, unless you see animals lining up two by two and a man building an arc we will play.

Should a week get cancelled due to lightening we will do the best we can to work with the facilities manager to schedule a make up date.  However, please understand that that may not always be possible.  We do not refund a percentage of the registration fee if weather cancels a week.  If it helps to think of the league as 6 weeks with a bonus rain date then think of it that way.

Game Rules and Regulations

The following are the rules and regulations our leagues are officiated under:

1. Our winter leagues are played 7 on 7.
7 on 7 is defined as 1 goalie, 2 defensemen, 2 midfielders and 2 attackmen.  A team may have a maximum of 3 players using long crosses (52” to 72”), not counting the goalkeeper’s crosse, in the game at any time.

2. Offsides
A team is offsides when: 1) It has fewer than 2 men in it’s attack half of the field (between the center line and the end line or 2) It has fewer than 3 men in it’s defensive half of the field (between the center line and the end line).  This ensures that play is 4 on 4 not 6 on 6 with only the goalies staying back.

3. All games are officiated under High School rules
It does players no good to learn to play the game under different rules then they will have to play for their local High schools / town teams. Therefore, the officials enforce High School rules

4. Faceoffs (At the start of each half only)
Face-off commands are a) down, set, and whistle. Note we only have faceoffs at the start of the game and second half. Jumping the face-off whistle is loss of possession. The faceoff player does not have to leave the field.

5. Game Duration
Unless otherwise noted, games are two (2) twenty three (23) minute running halves. Halftime is three (3) minutes long. Each team may take one(1) timeout per game. Timeouts are one (1) minute long. NO TIMEOUTS ARE ALLOWED IN THE LAST 3 MINUTES OF A GAME.

6. Penalties
All time serving penalties will result in Man-up opportunities not fast breaks. Because we use running time game clocks all penalties will be 50% longer than they would be in a stop clock game.

  • Technical Penalties - Any player (except the goalie) shall be ruled off the field for forty five (45) seconds.
  • Minor Penalties -Any player (except the goalie) shall be ruled off the floor for one minute and 30 seconds.
  • Fighting THERE IS NO FIGHTING.  ANY PLAYER OR TEAM WHO FIGHTS WILL BE EXPELLED FROM THE LEAGUE.  NO REFUND WILL BE AWARDED.  ALL PLAYERS ARE TO BE ON THEIR BEST BEHAVIOR.
  • Conduct/Language THERE WILL BE NO SWEARING OR TAUNTING OF OTHER PLAYERS PERMITTED.  PLAYERS THAT DEMONSTRATE MISCONDUCT WILL BE SUSPENDED FROM PLAY AND MAY BE ASKED NOT TO RETURN WITH OUT REFUND.

7. Overtime
If necessary, overtime will be a braveheart “sudden victory” format. The first team to score in the overtime period shall be declared the winner.  Note: During the braveheart at least one player (goalie or field player) must remain on the defensive side of the field.
